Urodynamic testing
An assessment of the function of the bladder, sphincters and urethra - a test that helps find the cause of urinary incontinence, urgency or a weakened stream and to qualify patients correctly for treatment.
Book a qualification consultation(opens in a new tab)When the test is performed
- the work-up of frequent urination, urinary urgency, a weakened stream and residual urine,
- the work-up of urinary incontinence - the test allows correct qualification for a procedure,
- before procedures to remove a prostate adenoma, including HoLEP laser enucleation.
How to prepare
- You should have a bowel movement the evening before or on the morning of the test (a mild laxative may be used).
- Come to the test with a full - but not overfilled - bladder.
- Prepare information about any previous procedures and the medications you currently take.
How the test works
Uroflowmetry
You urinate into a special device that analyses the flow rate and duration, the volume and the voiding curve. This part is painless and non-invasive.
Cystometry
After thin catheters are placed (into the bladder and rectum) and electrodes are attached to the skin of the perineum, the bladder is slowly filled with saline. We record the activity of the detrusor muscle, the pressures and any episodes of incontinence, and then analyse the voiding phase. The test is carried out under local anaesthesia.
After the test
After the test, taking an antibiotic is recommended to prevent a urinary tract infection. I discuss the result with the patient along with a plan for the next steps.
