Vasectomy is for men who consciously and thoughtfully choose permanent protection against conceiving a child - usually those who already have the number of children they planned, or who have deliberately decided not to have children.
Vasectomy is treated as a permanent method, which is why we discuss the decision calmly during a qualification consultation. It is not a decision made on the spot.
What problem it solves
Vasectomy is one of the most effective methods of contraception. It involves interrupting the vas deferens so that sperm no longer enter the semen.
The procedure does not affect testosterone levels, libido, erection or the sensation of orgasm.
The contraceptive effectiveness of vasectomy is around 99.95% - the risk of pregnancy is roughly 1 in 2,000. The failure rate of the technique itself is below 0.5%. Spontaneous recanalisation of the vas deferens is possible, including years after the procedure.
Although spontaneous recanalisation of the vas deferens is rare - and possible even years after the procedure - follow-up semen analyses can be carried out, which allow such a situation to be picked up at the right moment.
How qualification works
During the qualification consultation we discuss your motivation and expectations, the permanent nature of the procedure, how it is performed and the possible risks, as well as how effectiveness is verified afterwards.
This is the time for all your questions - including the ones that feel awkward. Qualification takes place in person, not online.
Qualification can also be carried out online, but I strongly encourage a visit to the practice - being able to meet before the procedure reduces anxiety and makes the procedure itself more comfortable.
How the procedure works
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. I gain access through a few millimetre-wide openings in the scrotal skin, made without a scalpel (no-scalpel vasectomy, NSV). Everything is done under local anaesthesia and usually takes about 20–30 minutes.
The vas deferens are then interrupted and secured: I seal the prostatic end with coagulation, the testicular end is either left open or sealed, and both ends are always placed in separate tissue planes (fascial interposition). This is known as the Canadian technique.
I perform the procedure in line with the current recommendations of the American Urological Association (AUA Vasectomy Guideline 2026).
You go home the same day.
Recovery
You can usually return to office work after about 2 days. Physical exertion and sexual activity are possible after 7–14 days, depending on how healing progresses.
Spend the first 24 hours after the procedure lying down - this reduces the risk of swelling, haematoma and pain over the following days.

Possible side effects and limitations
Like any procedure, vasectomy can involve complications:
- haematoma
- wound infection
- epididymitis
- painful granuloma
- chronic scrotal or testicular pain - significantly affecting daily life in 1–2% of patients
- very rarely, testicular atrophy
- a reaction to the anaesthetic
Complications are rare and usually mild; I discuss the details during qualification.
The no-scalpel technique is associated with fewer haematomas and infections than a conventional incision, and the gentle handling of the tissues limits damage to nerve endings.
The contraceptive effect is not immediate. The follow-up semen analysis is done after about 12 weeks and at least 20 ejaculations (the AUA guideline gives a range of 8–16 weeks). Additional contraception is required until effectiveness is confirmed.

Alternatives
The alternatives are other methods of contraception, including reversible ones. If plans change, microsurgical vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) is an option - I perform this procedure as well - but the success of a reversal is not guaranteed. That is why vasectomy should be treated as a permanent decision.
Before a vasectomy you can also store semen in a sperm bank. This is a safeguard in case your decision changes - it allows you to try for a child without having to reverse the procedure.

Can vasectomy cause permanent pain?
Chronic scrotal pain after vasectomy is rare. According to the American Urological Association guideline, pain severe enough to affect quality of life occurs in about 1–2% of men. The risk depends, among other things, on the technique - the gentle tissue handling of the no-scalpel method limits damage to nerve endings. Should symptoms appear, they can be treated.
Does it hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia; discomfort is usually minor and short-lived. On a scale of 1 to 10, patients most often rate the discomfort during the procedure at 1–2 points.

Is vasectomy legal in Poland?
Vasectomy is not prohibited by Polish law - no provision lists it as an unlawful act, and the procedure, performed by a doctor at the patient's express request, has been available in Poland for years. There is, however, no provision that regulates vasectomy explicitly either, despite calls for years to settle the matter. Before the procedure you sign an informed, written consent.
