Erectile dysfunction

A problem that affects a great many men - and one that, in most cases, can be treated effectively. I look for the cause, not just relief of the symptoms.

Where erectile dysfunction comes from

According to epidemiological data, erectile dysfunction may affect as many as around half of men aged 40–70. It is promoted by obesity, smoking, low physical activity, as well as untreated diabetes, high blood pressure and lipid disorders. A psychogenic background can also be significant.

An erection is a complex mechanism in which the nervous, hormonal and vascular systems work together - a disturbance in any one of them can disrupt the whole process. That is why finding the cause is so important. If the erection is painful and the penis bends into a curve, the right starting point is the page on Peyronie's disease.

02

What the diagnostic process looks like

We start with a detailed medical history (lifestyle, habits, physical activity) and a physical examination. The next steps are an assessment of glucose, the lipid profile and blood pressure, along with hormone tests that allow endocrine causes to be ruled out.

Erectile dysfunction can be the first sign of heart and vascular disease - in justified cases I refer patients for a cardiology consultation. For detailed diagnostics I use penile Doppler ultrasound with an assessment of blood flow.

03

Treatment options

I tailor treatment to the cause: from lifestyle modification and treatment of coexisting conditions, through pharmacotherapy, to shockwave therapy. Many patients manage to restore satisfying sexual function.

04

Shockwave therapy (ESWT)

ESWT involves stimulating the corpora cavernosa and the neurovascular system of the penis with low-energy acoustic waves, which supports the rebuilding of the microcirculation responsible for erection. The effectiveness of the method in some patients has been confirmed in clinical studies.

The procedure takes about 15 minutes, requires no anaesthesia and is well tolerated. I determine the number and frequency of sessions individually.

Frequently asked questions

Is erectile dysfunction a "normal" part of ageing?

The problem becomes more common with age, but it is not a condition you have to accept - in most cases effective help is possible.

Does ESWT hurt?

The procedure requires no anaesthesia and is usually well tolerated; it takes about 15 minutes.

Can an erection problem signal heart disease?

Yes - erectile dysfunction can be an early symptom of cardiovascular disease. This is one of the reasons why it is worth coming in for diagnostics rather than reaching for pills on your own.

Where should I start?

With a consultation including a medical history and basic tests. On that basis we will establish the cause and plan treatment.
