Penile curvature - Peyronie's disease
Fibrosis of the tunica of the corpora cavernosa leading to a painful erection and a curved penis. Contrary to appearances, it is a common and treatable problem; the earlier you come in for diagnostics, the more options we have available.

It is a condition involving fibrosis of the tunica of the corpora cavernosa of the penis - hard plaques form within it that cause pain and curvature during an erection. The name comes from François de la Peyronie, who described it in 1743.
The causes are not fully understood; suggested factors include repeated microtrauma of the penis, infections, atherosclerotic changes and the coexistence of chronic conditions (diabetes, gout, rheumatoid arthritis). It is most often diagnosed in men between 55 and 60 years of age.
How the disease progresses
- Active inflammatory phase - pain during an erection predominates.
- Stable phase - as collagen is deposited, palpable plaques form and the penile curvature becomes fixed.

Shockwave therapy (ESWT)
Low-energy shockwave therapy aims to stimulate the natural mechanisms that resorb the plaque and to relieve pain; it also has a beneficial effect on the mechanisms responsible for erection. The wave acts almost exclusively on tissue affected by the disease.
The procedure is non-invasive, requires no anaesthesia and lets you return to daily activities straight away. I select the intensity and number of sessions individually.
Other methods
In selected cases, injections into the plaque are used (including verapamil). For a fixed, significant curvature that hinders intercourse, surgical treatment - reconstructive penile surgery - is considered. I discuss the indications individually during the consultation.

Where the treatment takes place
Shockwave sessions take place at Andromeda Centrum Medyczne on ul. Mogilska 69A in Kraków - the Grzegórzki district, 31-545 Kraków. They are done on site, as outpatient sessions; they require neither a hospital stay nor general anaesthesia.

Frequently asked questions
Does penile curvature resolve on its own?
In some patients the changes partly stabilise or diminish, in others they become fixed. Coming in early - during the painful phase - offers the most options for conservative treatment.
Does ESWT hurt?
The procedure requires no anaesthesia and is usually well tolerated; it feels similar to an examination with an ultrasound probe.
When is surgery needed?
When the curvature is fixed and large enough to hinder or prevent intercourse. We make the decision once the active phase of the disease has ended.
