Flexible cystoscopy

Endoscopic examination of the urethra and bladder with a flexible cystoscope - under local anaesthesia, far more comfortable than an examination with a rigid instrument.

When cystoscopy is performed

Cystoscopy allows the urethra and the inside of the bladder to be assessed - detecting, among other things, tumours, stones, diverticula or changes in the lining. It is required in the work-up of visible and microscopic blood in the urine; it is also performed for follow-up after treatment of bladder cancer and for recurrent lower urinary tract symptoms.

Early detection of abnormalities makes treatment considerably easier - it is not worth putting off this examination out of embarrassment or fear of pain.

Cystoscopy shows the structure of the urethra and the bladder. If the question concerns how they work - the strength of the stream, urgency, residual urine - that is answered by urodynamic testing.

02

How the examination works

  • The patient undresses from the waist down and lies on the examination chair; the body is covered with a sterile drape.
  • The opening of the urethra is disinfected and an anaesthetic gel is instilled into the urethra.
  • I gently introduce the flexible cystoscope through the urethra into the bladder, inspecting each section of the urinary tract on a monitor.
  • After the examination, in most cases there is no need for antibiotics or painkillers.
03

Why a flexible cystoscope

A flexible instrument - unlike a rigid one - adapts to the natural course of the urethra, which makes the examination far better tolerated. I use a digital cystoscope with narrow-band imaging (NBI), which helps to reveal changes in the lining that are poorly visible under ordinary light.

Frequently asked questions

Does cystoscopy hurt?

The examination is performed under local gel anaesthesia, and the flexible instrument makes it usually well tolerated - most patients feel discomfort at most.

How do I prepare?

No special preparation is needed; I give detailed instructions when the examination is booked. It is worth bringing the results of previous tests.

Can I function normally after the examination?

Yes, you can return to everyday activities straight away. A temporary burning sensation on urination may occur.
